Continuing education is a great place to get your innovation on

Edmonton’s burgeoning tech and innovation industry is an exciting new climate full of career opportunities. However, many of these jobs require some form of formal training. Just because you don’t have these requirements at the moment, there’s no excuse to let your dreams of working in the innovation industry slip away. There are plenty of options out there for continuing your education and getting into the technology sector.

Do Your Research

Before you dive into classes and programs, it’s important to do some research and see what kind of jobs are out there that catch your eye. Maybe you’ve always been interested in Computer Science but never had a chance to get into it, or maybe you’re more interested in marketing or customer relations for a tech company. Whatever you feel like going into, it’s good to have a direction before you sign up for your classes.

Find the Right Institution for You

Once you figure out where your interests lie, the next step is to start signing up for those classes that will get you there. There are tons of options available around Edmonton to choose from. Places like Metro Continuing Education Edmonton offer a variety of classes like Blogging for Beginners and Social Media Overview, and at Next Step Continuing Education they offer full Career Development Certificates like Project Management. They’re great, quick courses (maybe a year long) that will give you a head start in the right direction.

If you’re looking for something more formal, then there are options for that as well. Both the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Extension and Athabasca University offer fully accredited certificates and degrees that range from Computers and Information Systems to Communications and Technology. These courses usually take longer to complete—sometimes upwards of two years—but the payoff is well worth it.

One of the other bonuses of Continuing Education is that many of these courses are offered online. This allows you to work around your own schedule and still keep a day job while working towards your future.

Start Working in a Field You’re Passionate About

After completion of your course of choice, all that’s left for you to do is apply for jobs in your field and start working with some of the best minds in Edmonton innovation. There are plenty of jobs out there, and more postings every day. Continuing your education is never in vain, and in this day and age is almost necessary to keep up to date with the constantly changing tech world—either through individual courses or full programs. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door and work towards making your mark on the ever-evolving world of technology.
